Postcards from Far Away Friends

Who doesn't love receiving letters/postcards in the mail? There's something so special about holding a tangible note in your hands and seeing the words and adorable little drawings handwritten so meticulously.

Although it's easy to understand why it is a dying communication method. In a world where facebook chat, twitter and skype rule the roost, the slow process (and $1 expense!) of actually writing a letter isn't so appealing.

But that's what makes letters and postcards so special! That little bit of extra effort taken makes you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside... someone loves me! Hahaha!

Just the other day I received a postcard all the way from PARIS from my friend, Emma (from Daydream Believer).

Made. My. Day. I just had to instagram it.

I'm thinking of replying with a postcard from Hamilton ha!... what do ya think? ;)

Check out Emma's blog, Daydream Believer . She seems to be having the time of her life living in London. I'm very jealous!

February Desktop Calendar

Original image source: HDW

February is upon us. Some might say it's the month of looooove (oooooooooh)!

September desktop calendar!

Yay for the first day of Spring (or Autumn if you're living north of the equator)!

I have been loving the desktop calendars that some of my favorite blogs have been doing each month. It is such an ingenius idea! It's so handy to have your calendar right there in front of you when you log on to your laptop each day!

I have been wanting to do my own for a while now but honestly, my indesign skills were lacking a bit! But, after some practicing and testing, I feel that I can finally give you something that you can be proud to put on you desktop, so here you go!

The image in the background is of Paris- one of my favorite cities (you can see the top of the Eiffel tower in the background)! It was sourced from artwallpapers.biz.

You can download it here. Let me know what you think and if you want me to keep doing them!

Enjoy!

Scenic movies: Woody Allen

I love watching movies! It's one of my favorite things to do, especially in the winter time! Lately, I've been watching a lot of Woody Allen films. They are so distinctively quirky and refreshingly different from your standard Hollywood blockbusters – which I love! But, the thing that I love most about Woody's films is the way he takes a location and somehow manages to transport you there through the screen! I liken it to watching a foreign film, just without the subtitles (for the most part– there are sometimes a few)!

If you have ever seen a Woody Allen film, you will know that they are not everyone's cup of tea– you either love them or you sit there confused, trying to figure out what all the hype is about! But, if you like films with a lot of stunning scenery, I would definitely encourage you to give one of his films a watch. These are some of his more recent ones...

'Midnight in Paris' (2011) is one of my favorites, probably because its set in the back streets and cafes of one of my favorite cities! The main character, Gil (played by Owen Wilson), is an American tourist on holiday in Paris, France with his fiance, Inez (played by Rachel McAdams). While wandering the streets alone at night, Gil is 'magically' transported back in time to the 1920s and adventure ensues!!

'Vicky Christina Barcelona' (2008) is another goodie about two American friends, Vicky and Cristina (played by Rebecca Hall and Scarlet Johansson, receptively), who are holidaying in Barcelona, Spain. They both fall for the same man, Juan (played by Javier Bardem), which causes problems for their friendship. However, Juan seems to have his own problems in the form of his mentally ill ex-wife (played by Penelope Cruise).

I am also looking forward to seeing 'To Rome With Love' (2012) when it comes out here in December. From what I've heard and read, its about a group of individuals whose stories intertwine while in Rome, Italy. If the all-star cast (Penelope Cruise, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page and Alec Baldwin to name a few!) is anything to go by, this should be a great film!

It's raining, it's pouring!

Being back home in New Zealand has come as a bit of a shock to the system for me. It was so sunny and warm in Brisbane so I'm finding it hard to re-adjust to the cold, rainy, overcast and wintery days that are all too common in Hamilton.

But I'm trying to be positive about it! After all, there aren't many places around the world that can hide from the drizzle! I've found that looking at pictures of wonderful places on rainy days has romanticised the wet weather, thus making a bit more bearable!

Take a look at some of my favorites, maybe they can inspire you to be positive on a seemingly miserable day as well...

Landmarks- The Eiffel Tower

In my mind, the Eiffel Tower is the indisputable mother of all landmarks. There is nothing more iconic to Paris, or indeed France, than this 1,050 feet (320 metres) tall structure of iron. It has been in an endless amount of movies and TV shows and Hollywood has made it seem as if every window in the city has a view of the tower!

You cant blame them though, it is just so beautiful...

I found it so interesting to learn that the Eiffel Tower was only meant to be a temporary structure; to be built for the 1889 Worlds Fair, stand for 20 years and then be torn down- Paris without the Eiffel Tower seems so unimaginable today!

The Eiffel Tower, under construction in July, 1888

Luckily though, the tower proved too valuable to be destroyed. It had become a huge tourist attraction (it was the tallest structure in the world up until 1930, when the Chrysler Building in NYC was completed) and was also found to be an effective radio transmitter, a job that it still has to this day.

The history behind the tower is one of the reasons I love it so much. It's also the reason why a trip to (and up) it is a must on my travel 'to do' list.
